Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in Young People

Date :2021-08-20

You may thing coronary artery disease which causes heart disease affects only the older people. You are wrong. An increasing number of people below 50 years suffer from cardiovascular disease

Cardio vascular disease (CAD) is a term used to denote a number of diseases that affect the heart and the blood vessels. It includes heart attack, heart failure, heart valve disease, vascular disease and stroke.

CAD is caused by the build up of plaque in the arteries. This makes the arteries hard, a condition called atherosclerosis. With the build up of plaque, the arteries also become narrow making it difficult for blood to flow through. Your heart will have to work harder to push blood through the narrowed hardened arteries. This damages your heart and as the condition worsens, you will develop chest pain.

You may start developing atherosclerosis in your youth, but you may not have any symptoms. If you are over 20 years of age, then you should have a regular cholesterol check up once every 4 to 6 years. If you have a family history of cholesterol orf heart disease, then you should take extra care with a regular check up with your doctor. Cardiac screening can begin from as early as high school to detect CAD at its earliest.
